In gas-discharge electron-beam guns, electron emission is due to bombardment of the cathode plasma ions produced in high-voltage smoldering discharge between cathode and anode. The initial formation of the electron beam is started by structural characteristics of the cathode and the anode site. Then, by focusing and deflecting lenses the beam is focused on the heated surface and moves along it with a given frequency and the trajectory.

The main characteristics of the gas-discharge electron-beam guns:

  • there is no need for additional pumping of the vacuum in the cavity guns by individual high vacuum pumps, gas discharge electron guns operate stably in the range of 10 ... 0.1 Pa;

  • low sensitivity to changes in pressure in the process chamber, vapors, and even metal sparks during the smelting process that allows for a stable melting of gas-saturated load of active metals such as titanium sponge ;

  • compact size, small weight, simplicity and reliability in exploitation;

  • long service life of the cathode;

  • attractive price due to the use of widespread and inexpensive materials in production and maintenance.
